§ How Much Is A Teh Tarik - Reefa - Interview §

etc - Issue # 118
24 Sept. - 8 Oct. 1999

What is a hip-hop artist like you doing in dinner shows?
Getting lost (laughs). For the love of money.

Why won't you sample a boyband song?
Because I don't like boyband songs. If I were forced to choose, that Westlife one is not bad. i prefer "Swear It Again" to anything by Backstreet Boys. I'd probably bring up the tempo, put in a few extra beats here and there.

Why is the yo-yo craze coming back?
I guess a lot of old crazes are coming back. Skateboards, for instance. Old school '60s and '70s type of feel in music is coming back also. You know like that Santana song, "Smooth". Oh shit, that's happening. I'd probably do something like that for my album.

When was your last wild night out?
Jeff Siah's 10th anniversary party at his house which was on August 18th, I think. He had huge sound systems, microphones, console, the works; so we all just jammed. And drank. And jammed. And drank. And drank. I came back home around five in the morning, walking sideways! (laughs)

Is the music industry full of big babies?
I wouldn't say big babies but I geuss it can mature a lot more. A LOT more.

Who would you consider a big baby?
Err...I can't say. The ISA will be after me.

Have you ever tripped over your baggy pants?
Never, thank God! My shoes normally hold them up. I'd never wear baggy pants if my shoes can't keep them from falling.

Pinpoint one scar on your body and tell me about it.
(Exhibits his scar-ridden forearms) Motor bike accident. I have some on my back as well. Me and my best friend were riding on the way back from a friend's brithday party somewhere last year. I confess, we had a bit to drink. On the way back, a car just came and rammed us from the back. From the middle lane, both the bike and my friend flew to the divider. I was in the passenger seat, so I flew to the other side of the road.

Is keeping saliva in a big problem while doing fast rap?
Not really. Normally, I try to keep my mouth as dry as possible. Sometimes I can't help it though.

Don't you think Puff Daddy is a sicko?
Yeah, I do. I don't like his stuff. He's got this whole "I'm cool" look, when he's obviously not.

But you took part and won the Puff Daddy rapping.
Yeah, because it was the only competition around. I had no choice.

Have you ever been publicly humiliated?
Oooh, so many times. Once, when I was schooling in Seremban at St.Paul's Insitution. There was this English Day singing competition so me and my friend sang this Michael Jackson song but I can't remember which. I had this big zit on nose and just before the show, it erupted. I went out with this huge plaster on my nose and the whole school laughed at me. It didn't help that it was during assembly time. That was pretty humiliating, I would say.

Would you eat human flesh in your life depended on it?
I'd cook it first, I guess. Only as a last resort. And there were no goats. Are there goats?

Are you the type of person who would tell someone they've got a piece of vegetable stuck in their teeth?
Yeah, but quitely. I'd just give him signs so no one else would notice. I don't like embarrassing people. I don't find it funny or anything. It's just a friend telling another friend that he's got something stuck in his teeth.

If you could direct a Spice Girls video, how would you make it?
Nudity would be the first word that comes to mind. The rest of it, I don't know. But if there were nudity then the rest wouldn't matter anyway! It's be a hit straight away. I'd pick the song "Viva Forever". Because they'd be waiting, haha!

Where was the last warung you went to?
I always go to warungs. That one near my house, I go there almost everyday. It's called Jay's Corner. he started with just one stall a long time ago that kept being torn down by MPPJ. But now he has a restaurant that stretches along the whole road and he drives an S-Class.

In that care, how much is a teh tarik?
60 sen for a hot one.
