§ Homebrew - Malique (Too Phat) - Interview §

etc - Issue # 128
11 - 25 Feb. 2000

Do people screw up your name often?
I had a show in Penang and it was really embarrassing because they announced us as Too Phak three times. I was like, "Damn, if you say it one more time, we're not going to perform." We get Too Pet or Too Pat and all this nonsense. Even when kids come to the stores and ask for Too Phat, the store oweners said it was banned because it was too explicit. They mistook it for Tupac.

What in the world is Whutthadilly?
"Whutthadilly?" is derived from "what's the deal?," so it's just a synonym for "what's going on?" or "how's it going down?" At first it was "what's the deal?" and then it became one word which is "whutthadilly?" It's ebonics, street slang. Instead of saying "what's up?" which is really corny, we came up with Whutthadilly?

When you were challenging Joe on the Net to rap and rhyme, did you think, "Boy, this guy's arrogant."
This whole thing about rap is all about being arrogant. When people rap, they tend to show that they're the best. You have this atitude when you rap, like in my songs, "I'm not a playa I just rap a lot / I brag a lot," and stuff like that. If you have this low-esteem about yourself, how're you going to excel? Why be negative when you can be positive and get all the chicks?

Tell me about the track you had the most fun recording.
'Skoo The Nonsense'. There are a mad amount of languages in there, we have Japanese, Chinese and even Bangladeshi. It was more of a freestyle kind of thing.
