Poetic Ammo began life as Poetic Ammunition, or PMO for short, in 1993 when Yogi B and his school friend MC Ena, both then at the tender age of 18, decided to form a rap group. The group did well, winning several rap competitions held in Kuala Lumpur and making a name for themselves amongst the urban youth.
Upon a chance meeting in a recording studio in PJ with Paul Moss and Kenny Tay, the two teenagers did an impromptu audition which got them signed to Positive Tone. Work began on a single, with Paul Moss as producer. Yogi B's outstanding talent shone through the recording and was displayed for all to hear on the single "Only You". Which was a rap-ragga version of the Flying Pickets' big hit. The single received good air-play and critical success.
MC Ena left the group in 1995 due to work commitments. Yogi B, determined not to let his dream fade away, began advertising for rappers across the country. Through auditions, he met the brothers Landslyde and C. Loco, then 24 and 18 years of age, from Kajang, who once participated in Asia Bagus. Yogi B was impressed with their talents and promptly invited them to join PMO. Yogi B also received a brilliant demo tape from a Fourth Former Ipoh Chinese boy. Impressed with the quality of rapping and beat-boxing, Yogi B roped in the young man, now called Point Blanc. The group decided to re-name the group and Poetic Ammo was born.
And what a birth it was! Poetic Ammo quickly gained a loyal following through their fiery stage performances around Malaysia. Their live set is filled with powerful performances and wild stage antics. A highlight of their performance is the beat-box, a vocal skill that has lifted Poetic Ammo above other hip-hop groups. Beat-boxing involves imitating musical sounds with the human mouth and Poetic Ammo has come close to perfection with this skill, much to the delight of their fans. This was on show for everyone when the group opened for Shaggy in 1996. The group also opened for Colonial Cousins, a performance which exuded a high level of confidence and professionalism.
Their debut album "It's A Nice Day To Be Alive" is not just critically-acclaimed, but also a commercial success. The album is not only multi-lingual, it incorporates Western-influenced hip-hop rhythms with Eastern musical textures. The results are simply amazing. The group has also pulled off an amazing feat by winning 2 prestigious AIM '99 awards, including the sought-after Best English Album award.
The group also contributed one song, "Who Be The Player," to the compilation album, "Tricks & Tales," which also features other artises from the Positive Tone family. The music video for "Who Be The Player" recently won the "Best Music Video" award at the AIM 2000 awards.
Poetic Ammo's sophmore album, titled "The World Is Yours," delivers 9 new tracks. The album is a masterpiece, featuring the guys at their best and a host of who's who in Malaysian hip-hop including Reefa, The Teh Tarik Crew and D'Alliance. Also featured is the legendary, Sheila Majid. Fumi, from John's Mistress, and Ferhad are also guests on the album. The first 2500 CD's came with a free VCD that not only plays the "Who Be The Player?" music video but also includes an interactive section where you can find out more juicy details about the group.
